We leave the ladder down.
Open Ladder Foundation brings internet access and practical digital, financial, and business skills to rural finca families in Colombia — free, in Spanish and English, starting in the Cañón de las Hermosas. This is the whole idea: most people who climb pull the ladder up behind them. We don't.
Our story
From the bottom rung.
The Foundation's founder started at the bottom — manual work, long hours, no clear door into the digital economy. The climb into technology-enabled work didn't happen because of luck or connections. It happened because, step by step, the right skills were found and learned, with no map showing the way.
That arc is the model the Foundation teaches — not a story about one person, but a path that can be shown, taught, and repeated for the families growing up on fincas today, cut off not by ability but by a missing connection and no one to show them what comes next. Open Ladder exists to make that climb ordinary instead of exceptional, and to leave the ladder down for the people coming up behind.
What we believe
Give people the tool. Then get out of the way.
In 2012, tablets were left — with no instructions and no teachers — in two remote Ethiopian villages where children had never read a word. Within minutes they powered them on. Within days they were using dozens of apps a day. Within months they had customized the software and worked around locked settings. No school. No permission. Just the tool, and the will.
That is our thesis in one experiment: the ability is already there. What's missing is access. Give a finca family a real connection, the right tools, and a way in, and self-directed learning does the rest. Our job is to hand over the tool — and then get out of the way.
How we work

Open by default
Curriculum and lessons are published freely, in Spanish and English, so they reach far beyond any one finca.
Free at the point of need
The families we serve pay nothing. Cost is never the reason someone can't start the climb.
Dignity, not charity
We hand people a ladder, not a handout. The goal is independence that outlasts us.
Built to be trusted
A majority-independent board, separate books, and transparency from day one — not once we're big enough to be asked.
